Miami, FL - The Cuba Study Group today released the following statement in response to a recent Washington Post interview with Alfonso Fanjul, published on February 2, 2014:

“The Cuba Study Group commends Cuban-American businessman Alfonso Fanjul for his leadership in indicating that Cuban-Americans should be prepared to play a constructive role in Cuba's future.

“The Cuban diaspora already represents an important asset in both experience and resources that is actively empowering Cubans to take control of their destinies through family travel, remittances and support for private entrepreneurs. We only expect this supportive role to grow as more Cubans begin to live with one foot on each shore.

“We also welcome the fact that Mr. Fanjul has ignited an important, timely, and critical debate within the Cuban-American community, and in terms of U.S. policy, on how to effectively respond to significant and structural reforms in Cuba.

“At the same time, we bemoan the personal attacks, innuendos, threats and insults proffered by some within the Cuban-American community against Mr. Fanjul and others who have expressed support for a change in Cuba policy. As usual, we condemn the intolerance exhibited by those actions, and the lack of respect for the personal integrity of those who may espouse alternative viewpoints. The virulence of these statements is unwarranted and shows contempt for basic democratic principles we are supposed to uphold.

“The Cuba Study Group encourages and promotes dialogue as the process needed to build a better future for the Cuban people. Such dialogue requires mutual respect and a diversity of positions.”
