Statement Upon the Death of Rolando Castañeda

The Cuba Study Group today issued the following statement on news of the passing of Mr. Rolando H. Castañeda of Washington, DC:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend Rolando Castañeda. Rolando was a brilliant economist who will be remembered for his generosity and deep commitment to improving the lives of the Cuban people.
A friend of the Cuba Study Group, Rolando selflessly volunteered his time and immense intellect in support of the organization’s research and economic analysis. His honesty was evident in both passionate advocacy as well as his respectful disagreement. His brilliance, kindness and generosity will be greatly missed, but his selflessness and contributions to the wellbeing of the Cuban people will not be forgotten. We offer our most sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
Rolando H. Castañeda was a cuban-born economist and retired executive from the Organization of American States and Inter-American Development Bank. A long-time member of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy and co-author of the Arcos Principles of Responsible Investment in Cuba, Rolando was a leader in promoting the rights of Cuban workers and encouraging human and economic rights on the island. Mr. Castañeda passed away on April 17, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. A mass was held in his honor in Washington D.C. today, April 22, 2017.
