April 16, 2018
Washington D.C. – April 19, 2018 will mark the first time in over half a century that Cuba’s Head of State will not be named Castro. The Cuba Study Group today published a White Paper analyzing the political, social, and economic challenges the island’s government faces as it prepares for its historic leadership transition. These include:
The competing centers of political power on the island and Raúl Castro’s successor’s relative lack of authority.
Currency unification.
Systemic institutional restrictions placed on the nascent private sector.
Hostile U.S. policy.
Migratory issues.
he role of independent civil society organizations.
The White Paper complements a publication published by CSG and authored by Dr. Pavel Vidal in March 2018 that focused on the economic challenges Cuba faces ahead of the leadership transition.
