MandelaWashington, DC - The Cuba Study Group issued the following statement today in reaction to news of the passing of former South African president and anti-apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela:

“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Nelson Mandela and express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends and the people of South Africa. Mr. Mandela was an example of leadership, humility and love who inspired millions through his passive resistance to apartheid and inclusive approach to national reconciliation and democracy. Mr. Mandela's commitment to self-determination and willingness to work with his adversaries for the greater good should serve as a model for all who seek the freedom and reunification of the Cuban nation.”

Nelson Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his efforts to dismantle the legacy of apartheid in South Africa by tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. He served as President of South Africa from 1994 through 1999.
